This summer 2020 the team behind Love Saves the Day Festival worked with Bristol’s celebrated food network to put on Breaking Bread – a pop-up, socially distanced, drinking & dining experience set up on The Downs in Bristol. Breaking Bread aimed to provide a home to a number of the cities best restaurants & pubs during the Covid-19 pandemic, to help ensuring both they and their supply chains can continue to trade & staff are kept in work – and created a much welcomed space for Bristol’s community to connect safely.
Breaking Bread’s team went beyond tackling travel – they recorded the carbon emissions from energy, waste, water and transport (crew, production and deliveries) over the three months that they opened this summer. They then donated to balance these carbon emissions through ecolibrium’s Trees+ programme: which supports partners to plant trees in the UK, protect areas of threatened rainforest from deforestation and work with communities in parts of the world most at risk from climate change to enable social & environmental regeneration through tree planting, sustainable farming, forestry protection and local governance.
In total Breaking Bread balanced 16.4 tonnes of CO2e which led to 38 acres of threatened rainforest being protected through The Rainforest Trust; 49 trees being planted in Northern Malawi through Temwa’s community led reforestation programme and 74 trees planted in the UK by Forest Carbon, through their Woodland Carbon Code verified carbon offset planting programme.
